Campsites Montenegro

Montenegro is probably not the first country you think of when looking for a camping holiday, but this small country by the sea is a very surprising and varied holiday destination. You will find kilometres of sandy beaches with trendy beach clubs as well as beautiful old towns like Kotor, whose medieval centre is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is not called the new Côte d'Azur for nothing. But a lot cheaper! Allcamps offers several excellent campsites by the sea here.

Read more about Montenegro

Montenegro is located in the Balkans on the Adriatic Sea and is about 1/3 the size of the Netherlands. About 650,000 people live there. Montenegro was already a popular tourist destination in the 1980s, but because of the war in Yugoslavia, which was fought mainly in neighbouring states, the country was visited by fewer and fewer tourists. Fortunately, this is rapidly changing, as Montenegro is truly a hidden gem on the Adriatic.

The name Montenegro comes from the Venetian language and means 'black mountain'. The country owes this name to the dark colour of Mount Lovcen due to the many pine trees that grow there. Montenegro has a Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers. The higher parts have a temperate maritime climate with milder summers. However, highs of up to 40 degrees are no exception.

The capital of Montenegro is Podgorica. About 180,000 people live here. The modern city of Podgorica is both the political and cultural capital of Montenegro.

In terms of nature, the country also has a lot to offer. The Biogradska Gora national park, one of the oldest protected natural areas in the world, contains the last patches of primeval forest in Europe. Montenegro has the longest beach in the entire Adriatic. The country also has several rivers, where you can go rafting, for instance. The Tara River has the longest and deepest gorge in Europe and, apart from the Grand Canyon, even the deepest in the world.

Montenegro has 2 airports: Golubovci near Podgorica and Tivat, on the coast near the beautiful town of Kotor. The country's roads are good, especially on the coast, and traveling in Montenegro is safe. Despite Montenegro not yet being a member of the European Union, its currency is the euro, and thus legal tender.
